The recent Superbowl featured a commercial from Dannon to advertise their Dannon Oikos Greek Style Yogurt. In the commercial a couple share a luscious cup of Dannon Oikos Yogurt. When there is one spoonful left, the man attempts to eat it. The woman head butts the man and knocks him off of his chair, his shoes fly off. When the man gets up off the floor, the snarling woman feigns another head butt toward the man as he recoils in fear.
Yogurt is primarily marketed to women, young women in the Superbowl commercial. The Dannon commercial took a faux romantic scene and turned it into a female on male domestic violence play. As Dannon says in their canned response to lodged complaints:
TPH,
Thank you for contacting the Dannon Company, Inc. We sincerely appreciate your interest in our products.
As the first yogurt company ever to advertise in the Super Bowl, Dannon wanted to entertain with a funny and playful depiction of how far someone might go to get our Oikos Greek yogurt. The head butt in the ad is obviously an over-the-top and unexpected move to do just that. Our intention was to promote our Greek yogurt in an unexpected and funny commercial.
Dannon is strongly opposed to any form of domestic violence or abuse whether the victim is a woman or a man. We certainly understand that people can interpret the ad in different ways and never intended to offend anyone through our commercial. The last thing we wanted was to offend our customers - it's bad business and it goes against every value we stand for. We are sorry if our advertisement offended any viewers.
As always, we appreciate your interest in our products and are always available to answer any questions or concerns that you have. We are pleased with your interest in our products. If you have any further questions, comments, or concerns, now or in the future, please feel free to contact us at 1-877-DANNON-US (1-877-326-6668), Monday through Friday, 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. Notice they are opposed to domestic violence against a women or men. So why did they make a commercial so obviously hostile toward men? It's Dannon's main customer demographic: Young women.
What is abundantly clear is that Dannon does not see, nor care that they have glorified female on male domestic violence. The commercial makes it clear that it's OK for young women to Head Butt men attempting to eat the last spoonful of Yogurt. What an asinine message to send young women.
Women on men violence has been a staple in comedy for years. Think of the wife hitting her neer'do well husband with a rolling pin or a cast iron frying pan. Comics and cartoons used the wife smashing her husband over the head with a frying pan gag for many, many years. Black and white, and even some color movies used the slapstick humor.
The frying pans and rolling pins are now gone from most of current comedy. They are kitchen utensils and would some how indicate the wife or girlfriend in the kitchen, which is a sign of the patriarchy the feminists vocally insist.
Men and women are conditioned from a young age to view violence against a woman to be abhorrent yet perfectly acceptable if a woman is violent against a man. That is a double standard. That is cultural misandry. Domestic violence is abhorrent if it happens to a woman or a man.
The core issue is that most people accept the double standard of female on male domestic violence and just allow it to happen in everyday life, in commercials, in entertainment.
Domestic violence against men and boys is a very real and very difficult subject to broach with the general public. Feminists insist that domestic violence only happens to women, so the vast majority of the public believes them. Only by showing the truth over and over will Men be heard on the topic of domestic violence against men.
When men report domestic violence they are often not believed by the police, prosecutors, or the courts. The stigma of reporting abuse by the wife or girlfriend keeps men silent. If a man does report domestic violence to the police, he is likely to be arrested merely for calling and reporting a crime against him.
This is what glorifying female on male domestic violence achieves: A one sided justice system with accepted double standards against men. This is what Dannon is promoting by making domestic violence against men somehow sexy and funny to young women. This HAS to STOP.
Men in situations where they are abused by their wife or girlfriend are much more likely to suffer depression and suicide. They have no support system or someone to turn to. There are very few government or NGO programs in place to handle male victims of abuse. The options open to abused men are homeless shelter, the streets, or jail. A very bleak set of choices.
Dannon's Superbowl commercial for Dannon Oikos Yogurt only empowers young women to be violent when they feel denied (denied a spoon of Yogurt!). There noting wrong with young women being empowered. When that empowerment leads to domestic violence against men, it needs to stop.
Dannon's Superbowl commercial for Dannon Oikos Yogurt has stoked the fires of resolve in me. I have filed a complaint with the FCC and with New York State's Attorney General (since Dannon's address is 100 Hillside Ave # 3 White Plains, NY 10603-2863 (914) 872-8400)
Dannon was right about one thing in their canned response to me: The commercial “was over the top”
The commercial was “over the top” offensive and incredibly misandrist.
We cannot allow this incredibly offensive commercial to go unchallenged.
