Office of Men's Health Legislation

Look for both the Senate and the House to introduce bills in 2009 which will establish an Office of Men's Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This office will mirror the work of the existing Office of Women's Health, which has helped to save thousands of women's lives and has improved the lives of many more.

Why do we need an Office of Men's Health?

Alarming statistics show that men's health is at great risk. On average, men die almost 6 years younger than women and suffer higher mortality rates for the top causes of death. The lives of hundreds of thousands of men will continue to be threatened unless immediate action is taken to combat this growing crisis. The Office of Men's Health will coordinate the fragmented men's health awareness, prevention, and research efforts now being conducted by federal and state government.
An Office of Men's Health, styled after the Office of Women's Health, will be well placed to coordinate outreach and awareness efforts on the federal and state levels, promote preventative health behaviors, and provide a vehicle whereby researchers on men's health can network and share information and findings.

Personally I feel that the only way to return any type of sanity to health care costs is to get the government completely out of the healthcare business. But since that will never happen I will support an agency for men's health. I do wonder, however, where the money is supposed to come from. We are broke.

I hate to be a pain in the ass but did you use the above link to send a pre-drafted letter(s)? It's too easy...the letter is written for you. And the Congressmen are identified for you. And you can send letters to all, all at once. Please do it...it only takes a moment of your time.

H.R 2115 is in the House right now and it's currently in need of a show of support. I probably sent out 20-30 notifications last night to members here at AM, asking for people to show their support for this... but so far..no responses.

I'm not really hopeful at all. There's been similar men's health bills with smaller provisions with close to 60 co-sponsors that haven't passed. And a democrat controlled congress isn't going to help.

I would recommend everyone using the great format TERA provided the link to and sending it specifically to the representatives listed here,

H.r. 2115

The bill is currently in committee (which becomes the land of the lost for the vast majority of bills), if we can't get it to pass committee, it will never have the opportunity to get put to a vote. I've listed the 59 representatives who are in the committee that decides whether or not it moves forward to the next stage of legislation. Please take the time to send letters via TERA's link to each of those members.

Something's wrong with this picture when only the females on this site are willing to (and have) sent in letters to Representatives. C'mon you guys. Where are the men? Am I being too impatient? Patience has never been my strongest virtue.
