" RESIDENT concerned with lack of resources for battered men"
while our social agencies and legal system place great importance on helping victims of domestic violence,one local man says the system is failing men who are abused by their partners.
wishing to keep his identity secret,the area resident says local programs and resources associated with domestic violence don't take men seriously and don't recognise that women can find themselves in the abusers roll.
"Men that need help,need a way to do it with dignity and not in hand-cuffs",he said."even when men phone the police it is the men that are more likely arrested !I am not suggesting that violence against women be treated any less seriously.I'm suggesting that men are victims too."
He also says the areas new Partner Abuse Response(P.A.R.) progam up holds the notion that men must claim all responsibility in a domestic abuse situation -admit to being an abuser or fail the program.
Detective ann Tkachyk has worked domestic cases in the Dryden area for over a decade.While she says cases of battered men in intimate relationships no doubt exist,They pale in comparison to occurances of abuse against women.both statistically and in her anecdotal experiance."
'Research has shown that in fact the overwhelming majority of family violence is men perpetrating violence against women.And they are a lot of reasons for that"said tkachyk"but there are men who are victims of domestic violence-it is recognized.The statistics on that may not be clear because men often don't report that they have been abused or assaulted in an intimate relationship."Tkachyk points out that there are services available to victims of domestic violence regardless of their sex.
Anyone may access councilling at the Dryden regional Health center through mental health and addictions service with-out a refferal.
The community's Crisis response Serivices phoneline is 866-888-8988.
The victim /witness assistance service is an arm of the crown attorney's office that helps the the victims of violence within the court system.
But the concerned resident says a lack of compassion,or a trusting ear with in the existing social and legal agencies that deal with domestic violence,is exactly why men don't report.He says a prevailing culture of assuming a males guilt in any domestic incident isolates and alienates men who legitimately need help,but will not seek help for fear of the system itself.
If they could phone a mens help-line.they would probably would report",he said.Where as ,if they phone the dryden hospital,they mostly deal with women."I don't think most men would phone there".
He'd like to see more government funds spent on programs taylored specifically to men who suffer from partner abuse and women who abuse.
Tkachyk says these kind of support programs do exist in larger centres,though their recent efforts to obtain a companion to the PAR progam,geared towards women who perpetuate domestic violence.were sidelined by a simple lack of numbers.
"All these services are based on government funding",said Tachyk.While we have the numbers to support the male group.we don't have the statistics locally to support that group of females who perpetrate violence".
Hoshizaki House director Bernice Connel says while the demand may not be there to recieve funding from the government.theres no reason why men could not organize support and sevices for male victims of abuse in a grassroots initiative.
And thats what the concerned resident plans to do.He hopes to start an initiative similar to Calgary'y MASH(mens alternative safe house)program, a shelter for men and their children who are escaping abuse.
"It gives men a chance to get out of a bad situation before the fists start flying",he said.They can phone and get help on how to get out of there with dignity,instead of phoning the police where chances are they'll get arrested".
Looking at the numbers, a 2004 report from statistics canada found in data over five years,show 654,000 incidents of violence against women,versus 546,000incidents of violence against men.Women were two and a half times more likely to report the most serious forms of violence.
In 41% of spousal homocides against men, police data from 91-04 determined male victims were the first to use or threaten physical force or violence in the incident(only 5 %among spousal killings of women) Police also found a history of violence between the victim and accused in 70% of spousal homocides against men(59%in homocides against women).

Therefore if men reported in equal numbers, logic would dictate that the incidents of violence towards men would exceed those of women.

thats right! Only thing is...when men call the police for help-they get a safe place called jail.
This is why the arrest records are so tainted-men that call for help are usually the ones arrested,as if it is against the law and that men need to be taught a lesson for calling on a violent or threatening female.

oh ya-if u read"my report" and can put 2 and 2 together about this detective who says "violence against men pales compared to violence against women" you will see why the difference in her opinion-as compared to the facts--help for women-jail for men,is her motto.
Every time this detective opens her mouth she makes her-self look stupider.
I have openly questioned her agenda on d.v. on the local web-site but i think her boss might have told her to shut her mouth as she just has no clue as to the facts on d.v..
Then she even threatened me on the same site which i was quik to point out of how "becoming of an officer",this type of behavior was on a public forum.

Translation: Violence against women MATTERS! Females MATTER!

Violence against men is irrelevant. Men don't matter.

Which no doubt has differing standards as to what constitutes DV between the sexes, and factoring in men vastly under reporting - you could hardly state that womens violence pales in comparison to mens.

It seems like 'selective' reasoning to me.

all i know is i have filed acomplaints against this same detective for child abuse,failing to do her job(both criminal offences for police), descrimination and treatening my son and I.Only to have the chief mangina dismiss them as hear say.

yep! it was a man friendly reporter that dug up the stats and did the interviews,but the editor thought my letter would piss to many people off the way it was written,so he more or less rewrote it,with my concerns coming to the forefront---this letter opened a lot of eyes as to how men are treated by the system.

This is a good example of how there are man-friendly elements within the news media, that will hear, and 'print' our concerns.

It's not all bad.

I am writing this letter in regards to domestic violence industry ! Research has shown that over half of all partner aggression is mutual and that women can be or are just as violent as men!(anyone with a computer can see the real scientific facts,(martin fiebert)! The failure of the justice system and the people that fund this "industry", to recognise that men are also battered, has just made things worse ! It is not funny that Canada says "no" to women abuse" and says"nothing" about men abuse! It seems also that around this area that only women are worthy of compasion and male victims do not deserve even to be mentioned ! Any harm to a man ,no matter how serious or deadly is less important than any harm to a woman,no matter how small ! Some men are not only the victims of domestic abuse but also victims of the domestic abuse industry ,where all men are the perpetrators and all women are victims and if men want or need help or support they end up in jail,alienated from their home and children,laughed at,made to feel its his fault or there just is none! The bias funding for media in this area helps the domestic violence industry along with the man-bashing that portays all men,not some men,but all men,as suspected criminals ! Men abuse women and women abuse men, to suggest that women are always innocent and men are always perpetrarors does nothing to help reduce domestic violence and hasn't for the last thirty years! I just cannot understant the tolerance and funding by the public for a system that has failed for so long ! All posters and all brochures are for women only and there is absolutely not even one pamphlet for men anywhere ,nevermind help and support ! Even the supposed P.A.R.(partner assault response) program which is the only offered support and help for men,portrays men as the perpetrator and the women as victims and men must admit to being abusive or fail ! This program which is based on the duluth model power wheel totally descriminates against men by forcing them to admit they were abusive and every thing is his fault, no matter what !Blame and shame, not help. Ideology, not science. Ignores drinking, drugs, pathology, violence by women. One cause, one solution. Taught by "wounded healers." Gender-polarizing-perpetrates the "battle of the sexes" ! This is the duluth model and there is NO evidence that it works !

Why not try the equality wheel instead ,which promotes getting along and help for both partners! There is a need for a men and childrens shelter in the area, As men who need help,need a way to do it with dignity and not in hand-cuffs ,even when the men phone the police it is the men that are more than likely arrested! There also is a need for a support system that helps all people who are affected by the domestic violence industry and not only women ! I am not suggesting that violence against women should be treated any less seriously, only that men are victims too ! Under the canadian charter of rights which has been thrown out the window by the domestic violence industry ,no one needs to be descriminated against regardless of sex, this includes men ! Men do need help and support just as much as anyone else when they become victims of a spouse or victims of the domestic violence industry ! The ministry of mines and development has granted more money to the domestic violence industry in a futile attempt to keep the jobs associated with domestic violence by using men as the new renewable resource! !

The use of power and control of women by men has changed with the times but our system fails to recognize this because to do so would hurt
their industry which is a lot of jobs and gov. funding at the mens expense ! Men are guilty with no chance of innocense !
The societal opinion seems to be;
if you are a woman or know one that is being abused call for help!
if you are a man or know a man or that is being abused we don't care!

to all the men; It is more manly to ask for help than it is to hurt or be hurt !

- just don't call the Dryden Police-chances are, you will be the one going to jail !!!

LOL. Your wife lives somewhere in female dreamland An example was my friend who grabbed his children away from his abusive wife to stop the beatings. He took the kids and locked himself and them in the bathroom until mom calmed down. She called the blue gun thugs and reported him for "DV."

He was arrested (while hiding behind a lock in the bathroom) and spent 2 weeks in jail. He got deported (he was here from India on a work visa) and his abusive wife got custody of his children. His life had been ruined.

It will be a long time before your wife's dreams of equal rights under law become true.

The sickening irony is that, it is women themselves who pose the greatest physical threat to children within the domestic environment. Yet it is women themselves who get herded together with their biggest victims, children. Absurd!

And, this skewed thinking always involves arresting the larger person (i.e. the male) who is deemed the primary aggressor (this doesn't apply when the woman is larger than the male of course). Ascertaining the FACTS are irrelevant, it would seem. The cops know who their going to arrest before they get to the scene.

Listening to the mans side of the story is just a mere tedious technicality they must indulge before they haul his ass off to jail.

"The officer need not arrest the other person alleged to have commited domestic violence." That "other" being the female! So according to this framework of law there's no such thing as 'mutually combative' anymore?

Furthermore, it clearly shows female allegations usurp the males (as did the whites over the blacks in the days of slavery!). This isn't law nor justice. It's a prime example of a socialist tyranny running amok.

Damn Billy, that law is very oppressive and discriminatory against men.
