Woman charged in granddaughter's death

LA RUE - A 68-year-old woman has been charged with killing her granddaughter and shooting her granddaughter's husband.

According to court documents, Gertrude Simpkins told police she used an key hidden outside her granddaughter's home Thursday, carrying a .22-caliber rifle. She waited for Amanda Corbin, 26, to return home and shot her.

Brian Corbin, 26, came home and found his wife lying dead on the floor. Then Simpkins shot him in the back. She then fled.

The injured Brian Corbin called 911, Marion County Chief Sheriff's Deputy Al Hayden said.

Although the motive for the shooting is not clear, Corbin told a dispatcher that Simpkins had been depressed since her husband died three years ago.

Amanda Corbin was pronounced dead at her home, and Brian Corbin was in fair condition Saturday.

Deputies found Simpkins five miles from the Corbin home. Simpkins was charged Friday with aggravated murder, felonious assault and aggravated burglary and was being held on $100,000 bond.
