OWATONNA — A kick to the groin landed one woman in court and another woman in need of stitches.

Misty Evert, 28, made her first appearance in Steele County District Court on Monday. She is charged with one count of third-degree

assault.

In December, the female victim was at a downtown Owatonna bar celebrating her 30th birthday with a group of friends. The woman said they were at the bar when another woman she did not know walked up to her from behind and kicked her in the groin area. She said the woman — later identified as Evert — did not do or say anything else, according to the criminal complaint.

The bar owner told police she saw a scuffle and had told Evert to leave the bar. She asked Evert why she kicked the woman and Evert said, “I thought it would be fun,” according to the complaint.

A witness said Evert kicked the woman “like she was kicking a field goal from the 50-yard line.”

Evert spoke to police later and said she had noticed the group at the bar. She said the victim was bending over letting people spank her. She said she only kicked her as a joke.

The kick caused an open cut which later required stitches.

If convicted, Evert faces up to five yeas in prison and a $10,000 fine.
