The DV conference held last February in Sacramento had a couple representatives from Taiwan. I don't think this is a coincidence. This change in their laws is probably a direct result of that conference.

Harsher penalties set for human traffickers
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- New regulations passed by lawmakers yesterday will increase jail terms and fines for perpetrators who engage in human trafficking, forcing victims into the sex trade or other labor services or selling victims' body organs without consent.
The revised rules of the Act Preventing Trafficking in Persons ratified by the Legislative Yuan levy a prison term up to three years plus a maximum fine of NT$1 million if the perpetrators use improper measures to force people owing debts to work for compensation not proportional to the labor service.

Aid to male victims
Other new rules passed by the Legislative Yuan included welfare aid to male victims of domestic violence and the families in which the children are in the care of their grandparents.
The reduction of tuition for children of such families and those with low income attending colleges or universities will be raised to 60 percent from the current 30 percent.
Lawmakers voted to extend assistance to more families in view of the increasing male victims of domestic violence and grandparents faced with financial burden when taking care of the third-generation children.
Such financial support will now not be limited only to female victims.
The legislators also adopted new rules requiring that government provide loans to domestic violence victims for business startups.
Good to see some common sense in Taiwan. Western countries can learn a thing or two!

I have a problem with omnibus legislations that give incentives like this. It increases the liklihood of false allegation. The reduction of tuition for children of such families and those with low income attending colleges or universities will be raised to 60 percent from the current 30 percent.

Correct percy. The whole DV industry is a statism promoting family-wrecking disgrace and is a method of encouraging the victim culture that creates state dependance by perverse incentivisation..
Decades after the work of Pizzey showed the true face of the industry, the MRM look to be heading down the same dumb road as a matter of policy..
Last edited by haahoo; 20th-January-2009 at 11:56 PM. Reason: slight addition
Demanding equal treatment does not necessarily mean that the MRM in general wants to depend a lot on government support (which is funded by men for about 70%, yet less than half of the resources goes to men).
The proper recognition and equal treatment of male domestic violence victims in Taiwan is a great milestone that is reason for celebration.

Creating perverse incentives for men to match the perverse incentives for women is no victory. 2 Wrongs dont make a right..
Folk who expect the state to solve their personal shit out usually have a not too hard to see hidden agenda..
Hand it to them as a carrot, and many folk will take it..
I really dont see the sense in providing DV victims prefferential treatment just because they are DV victims..
Sure the criteria could be on something a bit more universally applicable, such as income for example?
I really don't see the need for all this pessamism.
Of course dv shelters are massively overused by non victims, but that doesn't mean their aren't legitimate victims out there for whom these shelters are a fantastic thing.
DV is a fantastic area for exposing just how sexist and anti male most feminists and many governmetns are. It really is a great area for making feminist look very, very stupid.
This decision in Taiwan puts there massively ahead of us and should be celebrated wholehertedly.
Once shelters and support for men exists in significant amounts then most feminst are not only exposed as gender racists - it also means they have lost their argument and been caught lying.
The whole basis of all their theories about sexism, power and discrimination is fundamentally routed in the assumption that the male victims do not exist.
If we had polcies here such as in Taiwan (and they were sucessful) it would be such a massive blow for feminists - they would get so mad you wouldn't beleive it.
I was thinking, is Domestic Violence a feminist creation?
