Pensioner in court charged with murdering her husband by 'shooting him while he slept'
Pensioner in court charged with murdering her husband by 'shooting him while he slept' | Mail Online
A pensioner appeared in court today charged with murdering her husband by shooting him twice in the chest as he lay asleep in bed.
Helen Lawson, 61, is accused of blasting husband Geoffrey Lawson, also 61, in the early hours of the morning while he slept at their £200,000 village home.
Mrs Lawson then made a 999 call.
Police found his body after attending the cottage, which is the old village post office, with an ambulance crew just after 3.30am on Sunday.
Villagers say the couple were well-known in Wellow, near Freshwater, Isle of Wight.
It is understood that they had each been married before and had children from previous relationships. Mr Lawson was an electrician.
A middle aged woman who lives nearby said: 'It's a terrible shock that something so drastic has happened.'
A friend at the Wellow Literary Institute, who did not want to be named, said the couple often played bowls together at the institute and helped with village events.
She said: 'They have lived in Wellow for about three or four years and have played a very active role in the community.
'Geoffrey was a member of the Institute committee and carried out our repairs and printed fliers advertising our events.
'Helen loves art and is always on hand to help out with any activities we put on here.
'They played indoor mat bowls together here too. His death is a terrible shock to all of us here.
'It is a total mystery - they were just a typical couple who seemed to love village life and seemed very happy together.'
Joanna Minchin, who lives near the couple, said she had been awoken in the early hours of Sunday morning by police sirens.

Police tape off the cottage where the Lawsons lived.
Mrs Minchin also knew the Lawsons through the Wellow Literary Institute and believes they were only married five years ago.
She said: 'They have only lived here for around four years so I don't know them very well but I did see them from time to time at the Institute.
'I always saw Mrs Lawson serving out the coffee at the coffee mornings and Mr Lawson recently helped me clean up after a children's Christmas party at the Institute.
'They both seemed very good people, real stalwarts, and it's very sad that this has happened.'
A man in his fifties who was a friend of the couple said: 'They were a lovely couple and a great laugh.
'They spent a lot of their time at the Institute and were always helping out. This is a terrible surprise and I'm at a loss to explain it.'
Tonight there was no one at the pretty two-storey cottage, which is split into two properties and called 'The Old Post House'.
John Whitney, clerk of Shalfleet Parish Council, said: 'Wellow is a lovely peaceful place with a real community spirit. Villagers will be shaken by this tragic news.
'It is a very rural area and it's possible some people will have shotgun licenses.'
Hampshire Police spokeswoman Lucy Dibdin said: 'At 3.32am on Sunday police received a call and attended an address in Wellow Top Road, Freshwater, Isle of Wight.
'Upon entering the property with ambulance crew, they found the body of a man.
'A 61 year old woman from Freshwater was arrested on suspicion of murder.
'A post mortem examination is being arranged and will take place in due course.'
Mrs Lawson appeared at Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court in Newport today.
She was remanded in custody to appear at Winchester Crown Court on April 6.

Yet another one.
Whatever reason, fantasy or otherwise, that she or anyone else might have 'felt' justified her action, she MURDERED an unarmed and defenceless man. While he was sleeping.
(Mind you, it is a good way to go).
She will get 'sympathy'. (as defined by women).
I doubt I would get sympathy if I shot a Judge or a Lawyer who was walking and talking and ruining someone's life for profit.

Did preacher’s wife get away with murder?
Mary Winkler released after serving just 67 days for killing husband

Mary Winkler, the Tennessee woman who shot her minister husband to death while he slept, was released back into society this week after serving just 67 days, most of it in a prison hospital...
“I think it sends a terrible message about the criminal justice system, that you can commit a homicide and literally get away with it,” added Pirro.
Winkler admitting shooting her husband, Matthew, with a 12-gauge shotgun on the night of March 22, 2006, in their parsonage home in Selmer, Tenn...
During her trial in April, she claimed that she had been abused...
She was indicted on a charge of first-degree murder, but on April 19, after eight hours of deliberation, the jury found her guilty of voluntary manslaughter. On June 8, she was sentenced to 210 days in prison, with credit given for 143 days she had spent in jail the previous year before making bail. The judge allowed her to spend 60 of the remaining 67 days of her sentence in a mental health facility.
... “You had a preacher, who by all accounts was loved in his community, who was shot in the back while he slept. You have a woman who says she was abused with no history, no shred of evidence.”...
She said at her trial that he made her watch pornographic videos and wear “slutty” outfits for sex...
At the time of the killing, the couple had been having arguments about their finances. Prosecutors introduced evidence that Mary Winkler had gotten involved in an online Nigerian check-kiting fraud and had written checks for thousands of dollars. That, the prosecution argued, was the real source of the friction in the marriage...
“What’s interesting, Meredith, at the trial, she took out a pair of high heels and she said, ‘This is how I was abused. He made me wear these heels when we were intimate with each other,’...
In America it can take decades for a convicted killer having committed the most heinous of crimes to be finally executed. It is a long protracted process with much legality, appeals and so forth.
Ironically, in the western world, women can forego any such tedious formalities, and assign themselves judge, jury and executioner - in response to the most piffling of misdemeanours, real or imagined, inflicted by their male partners.
The lack of any real sentencing in similar prominent cases sets a precedent for extreme leniency to be dealt in similar subsequent cases, which not only ensures justice itself isn't being administered, but also provides an alluring incentive for those women seeking to despatch their troublesome husbands.
Outdoors mentioned it will be open season on men? At least with a hunted prey it has a chance of survival. In many such cases men are cowardly butchered whilst they sleep or otherwise incapacitated, by way of burning, shooting, poisoning, stabbing, bludgeoning and decapitation. Yet despite guilt being overwhelming proven in many cases, society and the law still fanatically seeks to absolve, sympathise and glorify these savage animals.
