Boys' homicide shocks small Alberta town

An RCMP officer removes police tape Wednesday at the house in Millet, Alta., where the bodies of two children were found. (CBC)The news Wednesday that two young boys found dead in their home were victims of homicide has shocked residents of Millet, Alta., a community of about 2,100, 40 kilometres south of Edmonton.
"I just can't fathom losing two children at that age just starting their life," the town's mayor, David Gursky, said late Wednesday afternoon. "It's so hard to just accept this has happened and especially in our community, in any community, but especially ours. It's pretty tough."
The bodies of the two boys were found in their home by their father, Curtis McConnell, on Monday afternoon. A neighbour said he told her he had found the children in the bathtub.
On Wednesday, RCMP confirmed that Connor and Jayden McConnell, age 2½ and 10 months, respectively, died as a result of homicide. No charges have yet been laid in connection with the deaths.
In a written statement Thursday, the boys' godparents, Garth and Crystal Rapson, urged people to give the family and the boys "the honour and respect that they deserve."
"Remember them," they said of Connor and Jayden. "They were loving boys filled with joy, laughter and love for their family and friends. They were always smiling and laughing.
"Connor loved to get dirty and be active and play chase games and he loved his little friends. Jayden loved to eat and was making discoveries and growing daily."
Father posts messages on Facebook site
On a Facebook memorial page set up for his two sons, McConnell wrote about his grief early Wednesday.
A photo of Connor and Jayden McConnell on a Facebook memorial site set up by their father. (Facebook)"The questions go through your head: How do we move on? Why did it happen? Why now?," he wrote. "Nothing can undo what has happened. Just holding on the feelings I got from holding them. They loved me so much, and I loved them so much."
McConnell's friend, Cara Rotenburger, has been speaking with him since the boys were found. Rotenburger said McConnell told her he rushed to the house in Millet after Edmonton police told him his wife was in the hospital and that the children weren't with her.
"He was frantically searching the house for his kids," she said. "And then this door is locked and shut. He didn't know what's going on because his kids aren't anywhere in the house, and there's a door that's not normally used, shut and locked."
Edmonton police said a woman tried to kill herself by jumping off a Gateway Blvd. overpass in the south part of the city an hour before the boys' bodies were found on Monday. They have not named the woman nor have they confirmed whether the incident had any connection to the investigation in Millet.
RCMP confirmed a car found parked near Gateway Blvd. in Edmonton Monday is connected to the house in Millet, but they have not said how.
According to court documents, Curtis McConnell and his wife, Allyson, both 31, had separated in November and were embroiled in a custody battle over the boys. Allyson McConnell wanted to take the boys back to her native Australia, but her husband wanted them to stay in Canada.
A judge had ordered in December 2009 that the children remain in Canada for the time being and the parents share custody. The court also ordered Curtis McConnell to vacate the family home in Millet by the end of December 2009.
News of the homicide investigation has attracted attention from the Australian media, some of whom have sent news reporters to Millet.
"When the story broke, it was the lead story," Peter Stefanovic, a TV reporter with Australia's Channel Nine Network, said Wednesday. "Still today, 24 hours later, it's still a lead story, and I think it will dominate the headlines until the case is finished."

note to administration--i would really like to edit the title of this thread but it cannot be done
I've seen this case being mentioned in the nightly news on television here in Sydney. They're bending over backwards to find excuses for the woman, to keep the story vague, etc. I agree with Dio's post about the pussy pass and morality.

The funeral for Connor and Jayden McConnell — two young brothers whose bodies were found in a bathtub in Millet, Alta. — will be held on Saturday.
Connor and Jayden McConnell, shown here on a Facebook memorial site, were found dead in their home in Millet, Alta., on Monday. (Facebook)
Connor, 2½, and Jayden, 10 months, were found in the bathtub by their father, Curtis McConnell, on Monday. RCMP said the boys were killed but no charges have yet been laid.
The service is to be held at 1 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Wetaskiwin, which is about 20 kilometres south of Millet. The pastor, Wayne Jorstad, said it is difficult to prepare for this type of service.
"We talk with people, just trying to understand where they're coming from and caring for them and reminding them of God's presence even in the darkest of hours."
McConnell told a reporter with Australia's Channel Ten Network that the children's mother, Allyson, was undergoing a psychiatric assessment at an Edmonton hospital and had several broken bones.
Ten also reported that McConnell's mother and sister were travelling from Allyson's homeland, Australia, to see her in Edmonton, where she remained in hospital.
An hour before the boys' bodies were found, Edmonton police said a woman jumped from an overpass in the south end of the city.
RCMP have not confirmed whether this was Allyson McConnell but they have said a car from the house in Millet was left in a nearby parking lot.
The couple had separated in November and Curtis McConnell had initiated divorce proceedings a month later.
Court documents reveal custody of the boys had become a contentious issue between the pair. Allyson McConnell wanted to bring the boys back to Australia, but Curtis McConnell wanted them to remain in Canada.
In Wetaskiwin, preparations for the funeral were to continue Friday. Calvary Baptist Church can hold almost 700 people, but Jorstad expected many more would attend Saturday's service.
On Friday night, members of the community in Millet were to hold a candlelight memorial for the youngsters. Starting at the Agriplex near Millet town centre around 6 p.m., the candlelight procession, organized by friends of the family, will continue to a playground near the McConnell family home.

This just goes to show that women are spoiled brats, if they can't have something they destroy it, in this case it was the lives two innocent boys.

Two slain boys mourned at Alberta funeral

WETASKIWIN, Alta. — Photographs in the foyer of a crowded church Saturday painted a picture of two happy, busy lives cut short.
Two-year-old Connor McConnell smiled from the seat of a toy tractor in one photo; his 10-month-old brother, Jayden, grins like a cherub in every frame.
The two boys were found dead in a bathtub at their home in Millet, Alta., outside Edmonton this week.
Their deaths have been ruled a homicide, but no charges have been laid. Their mother is at the University of Alberta Hospital undergoing psychiatric assessment after an apparent suicide attempt.
The boys were mourned Saturday during a ceremony at the Baptist church in Wetaskiwin, about 70 kilometres south of Edmonton.
The boy’s father Curtis McConnell found the bodies of his boys.
He and their mother, Allyson McConnell, had been in the middle of divorce proceedings.
They were in also the midst of a custody battle. At the heart of it was an application by Allyson to take the boys back with her to live in her native Australia.
The two met in November 2005 when Allyson was in Canada on a work visa. They married in Australia in January 2007, and separated in November 2009.
Some mourners came early to grab seats in the crowded church. The children of one family carried well-worn stuffed animals.
“Their own beloved toys for two beloved, little boys,” said their mother, who like many mourners simply wanted to come out to support the grieving family.
A steady stream of mourners filled the church and signed the guest book.
A poem for the children was published in the church bulletin: “The little ones we longed for were swiftly here and gone, but the love that was then planted is a light that still shines on. And though our arms are empty, our hearts know what to do. Every beating of our hearts says that we love you.”
The tragic case has garnered attention nationwide.
Public memorials have grown outside the McConnells’ house this past week, and a Facebook group in tribute to the boys has ballooned to more than 20,000 members.

Hundreds expected to attend funeral for slain Alberta boys

Hundreds of people are expected to pack a church in central Alberta on Saturday to mourn the deaths of two young boys found in a bathtub earlier this week.

Police are not releasing how the boys died and no charges have been laid, but police have said the deaths are homicides.
Leann Melan attended a vigil with her children in Millet Friday night.
She said the deaths have upset many in the community.
"Everyone feels sorry for the boys," she said. "It's not a good thing for someone to do something like that [to] two boys, two little ones. That's just sick for anybody to do it."
Cindy King, also from Millet, said the deaths will "be with people for a long time."

The funeral, being held at the Calvary Baptist Church in Wetaskiwin, Alta., will be streamed live from the Facebook site set up in memory of the two boys.
McConnell, 31, said on the memorial page that he has been left with "unanswerable questions."
He told a friend that he got a call from police saying his wife Allyson, 31, was in hospital shortly before he found his sons' lifeless bodies in a bathtub.
Court documents show the McConnells are going through a painful divorce, with custody of the children a major issue.

Alberta mother charged in slaying of sons

Connor and Jayden McConnell are shown here on a Facebook memorial site. (Facebook) The mother of two young boys found dead in a house in Millet, Alta., earlier this month has been charged with their killings, the RCMP said Tuesday.
Allyson Louise McConnell, 31, was charged Monday with two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of her sons, Jayden, 10 months, and Connor, 2½ years.
Police waited three weeks to charge McConnell because of their duty to perform due diligence in the investigation, RCMP spokesman Cpl. Wayne Oakes said.
"Charges cannot be sworn until such time as they have reasonable and probable grounds to believe that a person has in fact committed an offence," he said. "That decision was reached as of yesterday."
McConnell has been remanded into custody and will appear in Wetaskiwin provincial court on March 16.
McConnell will remain under 24-hour supervision in a medical facility until it is determined she is well enough to be moved to a correctional facility. That decision would be made by medical officials, Oakes said.
Privacy laws prohibit the RCMP from releasing details about McConnell's medical condition.
"Ms. McConnell has the right to medical privacy and I can't speak to her specifics without her expressed consent, and to my knowledge she has not given us that consent to speak about her current condition," Oakes said.
The boys were found dead by their father, Curtis McConnell, on Feb. 1, in Millet, a town about 40 kilometres south of Edmonton. A neighbour said McConnell told her he had found the boys' bodies in the bathtub.
The RCMP have not released the cause of the deaths.
