Greek 'heroine' who 'set fire to drunk Briton's genitals' with a flaming Sambuca to stand trial

A Greek woman who was hailed a national heroine after allegedly setting fire to the genitals of a British tourist will stand trial.

Marina Fanouraki, 26, handed herself in to police to be put on trial for what she said was her 'right to self-defence' after the incident in a crowded bar in the holiday resort of Malia on the island of Crete.

She went before a magistrate today, who decided the case will go to trial on Monday on charges of bodily harm and endangering private property.

Fanouraki has given evidence, however, claiming that she didn't set fire to the man's genitals.

Instead he did that himself when he dropped a cigarette, she said.

The British victim, 20-year-old Stuart Feltham, of Swindon, Wiltshire, suffered second-degree burns to his genitals, police said.

He is recovering in a private clinic in Heraklion following the incident on Wednesday.

Lawyers acting for Mr Feltham in court today alleged that Fanouraki provoked the argument.

According to reports, Mr Feltham first behaved offensively towards a number of girls in the Electra Bar including Fanouraki.

Fanouraki told the court today that Feltham had grabbed her from behind. When she turned around, he was exposing himself, she claimed.

She told the court and police that she asked him to stop harassing her before pouring Sambuca, a highly-flammable aniseed liqueur, over him.

When he failed to stop, she is initially alleged to have confessed to setting light to the liquor with a cigarette lighter.

However in court today she is said to have claimed that Mr Feltham caused the fire himself when he dropped a lit cigarette.

As Fanouraki was led away from the bar by police, a crowd of onlookers applauded and shouted: 'Bravo, bravo.'

The story has made national headlines in Greece where some have hailed the woman as the 'Cretan heroine'.

Mr Feltham's father Ian last night denied his son had sexually harassed anyone or that his genitals were burnt.

He said he was the victim of an unprovoked attack and was injured 'from his neck to his belly button'.

'Stuart swears blind that he's never met or seen her,' he added. 'He's not the kind of lad who gets himself in trouble - he's a kindhearted, generous boy.

'I truly think it was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

'He said some girl just came up to him and threw some party trick fuel over him, then set him alight.

'We received the phone call at 3am from one of his mates, and it was very worrying.

'He said: "There's been an incident", and his words were "He's been torched". It was a terrible, horrible attack.

'Stuart said he was chatting to some guy sitting on a bar stool, and was just walking out when she just ran up to him and did this.

'He was burned from his neck to his bellybutton, and his hair's been singed.

'He's fine now, and we've spoken to him. The doctors say he's progressing well, and he's in good spirits.'

Mr Feltham had been holidaying in Crete for two weeks before the incident on what was due to have been his last night there.

George Papadakis, the news director of Kriti TV, Crete's largest television station, told the Telegraph the incident was 'unfortunate because it highlights the risks of excessive drinking getting out of hand.

'We have received many calls from the public which on the one hand demonstrate that the great majority of British tourists are well behaved and most welcome.

'But on the other hand there is obvious hostility towards its troublemakers, and support for the Cretan girl because they feel that she reacted in defence of her honour.'

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: 'We can confirm that in the early hours of Tuesday a British male national was assaulted in Crete.

'We understand he suffered burns on his chest and abdomen.

'He has been receiving consular assistance.'

Electra Bar has been in Malia for 20 years and promotes itself as 'Malia's craziest bar' with the warning 'Enter at your own risk'.

If this story is accurate, and the young guy did flash his genitals and sexually assault this girl then he should face charges for it, and she should be treated as a victim, however if this article is not accurate then she should face charges...

I hope that the public give the cretan authorities time and space to find the truth, and support them in thier pursuit of justice...

Yeah, yeah, I'm sure he was the picture of innocence and sobriety - not!

I'm not defending this young lady's actions, but we've all seen the repulsive way some young Brits behave when they're on drunken holidays and, if what she claims he did is is true, I completely understand why she acted in the way she did.

Isn't it funny how the parents cannot see the truth... How come a crowded bar witnessed the entire incident yet his Dad says he is a mild mannered boy! Sorry but he deserved it if he was waving it around. Might make him keep it in his pants next time!
