A drunk mother who left her baby son outside in his pram on a cold winter's night has escaped a jail sentence.
Paula Smith, 25, left her child outside in the early hours of New Year's Day. He was discovered hours later in an overturned pram by a passer-by who alerted police.
Ms Smith, from Wirral, Merseyside, was arrested and charged with neglect. She appeared at Wirral Magistrates' Court yesterday where she admitted neglecting, abandoning or exposing a baby in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering.
A spokeswoman for the court said Ms Smith, from Pemberton Road, Woodchurch, received a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months and was sent on a programme to deal with her alcohol problems. She was also ordered to pay £80 costs.
