Police are calling the death of a two-year old girl a tragic accident after she got her head caught in the power window of a vehicle while her mother was running an errand.

The accident happened after the mother stopped to run a quick errand on the way to dropping her six-year-old son off at school.

She left her children in the vehicle with the engine running.

The tot began crying and her brother unbuckled her from the car seat but fell asleep soon after.

The two-year-old was somehow able to activate the power window and witnesses heard her calling for her mother, said Insp. Luch Berti.

Â“Another witness then walked up towards the vehicle and observed something sticking out of the window and discovered it was the young child,Â” he said.

The man freed the girl from the window, placed her on the car seat and then ran into the office building to call 911.

In the meantime, the mother returned to the car and assuming both her children were merely sleeping, she buckled her daughter into the car seat and drove towards her sonÂ’s school.

It was near the school, at Memorial Dr. and 52 St. N.E., the mother noticed her daughter was unconscious and in a panic called 911.

Berti said a police cruiser driving past noticed something was wrong and pulled over to help the woman.

They immediately began CPR and first-aid while waiting for EMS and members of the Calgary Fire Department to arrive.

Â“ItÂ’s heroic to even contemplate doing that,Â” said Berti, adding itÂ’s very rare for police officers to have to give CPR.

When emergency crews arrived, paramedics began advanced life-support while the two police officers escorted the ambulance to the hospital where the child was pronounced dead.

Â“Combined we all tried our very best,Â” said Berti.

Â“Our guys are devastated.

Â“A lot of them wanted to rush home and give their own children hugs.Â”

What's really sad is a story I heard from some guy doing our bathroom...he knew this couple with a 2-year-old son (our son was also 2 at the time)...he kept climbing out of his crib so his parents put a mattress over it. He wound up getting caught between the crib and the mattress and choking to death.

There are things you can put on the crib to prevent them from getting out--and there is a such thing as a toddler bed!

I recall an identical one, but it was a babysitter who'd done it, not the parent/s. I don't recall the outcome but one side said she was guilty of abuse & neglect, while the other side said it was an obvious accident.
