Re: What Does a World Governed by Humanistic Socialism Look Like? | | Several issues need to be clarified before one can even approach the what, why's and the hows.
The Club of Rome idea was started after a long, protracted 75 year old war, both physical and ideological that had consumed Europe and eventually involved the entire world. Never in history had the entire world become embrioled in what was essentially a local issue. The future potentials were horrendous.
The massive rise in population since the middle of the previous century, brought about by medicine, hygene, technology and science had led to the world becoming much, much smaller. The very physicality of constraint caused by a spherical planet coupled with this population explosion meant that we could no longer move away to unoccupied lands but had to face the entirely new concept - new to humanity and never encountered in mankind's history or experience before - of ever closer relationships, intenational inter-relatedness, and devastation from disagreement between the membership of the now 600 year experiment with 'Soveriegn' States.
Global fora experiments had been tried. The League of Nations; the United nations. These had not worked. The ideological 'standards' of Democracy and Communism had not been resolved - as indeed they still haven't - and since then we have been presented with a communistic consumer model which is presenting a third way. One may not like the third way - of China - but it controls one in five people in the world. It is a 'player'.
Back in the 50's, 60,s and 70's there was a strong urge not only for resolution of the ideological issues but the management of international relations in a world where ideas and ethical considerations were seen as common to all people. Which ethical constellation was still up for grabs and there was significant danger that 'Might makes Right' would prevail. It was an attractive ethic to all sides. It still is. There was also an ethic that claimed the Rights of the many over the rights of the few, or even the individual. That was attractive to all sides too. It still is. Trade between nations was a common issue for everyone and everyone wanted a piece and everyone wanted no one else to interfere with it except themselves.
It made sense back then to put the best minds to the problem.
It was virtually inevitable, given the nature of the two dominant ideologies that a pronounced 'socialist' model would be adopted. 'Socialist' was a euphemism for a half-way meeting house. The problem with that was just how does one integrate Evil?
That is the history; the background.
There are historical forces driving humanity to become 'One World' and its is inevitable that one means of ordering the world will be sought. We have been moving in this direction, like it or not, individually or group determined or not, for close on 500,000 years.
To talk of 'conspiracy' is intellectually dishonest and childish.
To expect any answer to be totally right is naive. To expect 100 people to determine the furture of mankind with any form of infallibility is pretty stupid.
But the fact remains that the World, Humanity, WILL organise itself, one way or another, for the good of humanity or otherwise.
What we did not have then, we are building now. A world linked. A world where one can talk to another across the globe instantly. A world where leadership and decision-making consideration - before and after the event - is being taken away from the few and handed to the many.
The 'Club of Rome' was a bold experiment. It was initiated before the 'World Brain' was started. We now have the infrastructure for it laid down. The Internet. It needs a Mind (and a Heart) to inhabit it.
We need to move forward with a better model than considered by the CoR.
But make no mistake, the very same considerations will have to be faced.
What is needed, included in the mix, is a recognition that we are not the be-all and end-all; that we are in progress on a path to somewhere - or someone; that there are specific elements that will determine the right path and progress which include Love, Honesty, Truth and Reason, emotional and intellectual sensitivity. Take any one out and you get something less than human and a humanity that has not just missed the boat that has taken thousands of years to build but drowned at the dockside.
I have tried all my life to leave the place better than I found it. But there are 6 billion other buggers out there messing it up. I am outnumbered. But... YOU don't just make a difference, you make THE difference. |
